The ten best websites for finding cheap accommodation all over the UK

webs-alojamiento-en-londres-uk

Originally this list was supposed to be a ranking of the alternatives we have for finding accommodation in London, as it’s the capital and most people go there because they don’t have enough information about other cities. But 99% of the websites we’re going to share with you can be used to find accommodation (the cheapest possible) in any city in the United Kingdom. I’ll separate them into three categories: for students, temporary, and long-term.

For students

Specifically for if you’re doing Erasmus or studying your degree in the UK. The most popular cities to study in (London, Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, Manchester…) are a little expensive if you don’t look at the right time. There’s a lot of demand in the areas near the campuses and plenty of people with millionaires for parents ready to pay the price of a house for a room near their department. Then there are the other problems: you don’t have a job, you don’t have references, etc.

1. Accommodation for Students

Lets you look for rooms and houses in cities, list of private residences, options for renting your room when you go on vacation and a very useful guide for students.

2. London StudentPad

Good search engine for accommodation offers in houses for students in London. You can get email alerts with the latest news, statistics, and pricing data by area, publish announcements, and also find advice and ideas that will make your life a little bit easier when it’s time to look for your new place in the capital.

For people looking for something for the long-term

Starting at a six-month minimum, which is a normal contract length for renting a room or house. Sometimes you can even find something for three months, if that’s what you’re looking for. The most recommended options:

3. Spareroom.co.uk

Undoubtedly the best website if you’re looking for a house or sharing a place. Advanced searches, email alerts, many chances to share possible offers with your Friends on social networks, and more features like an option to rent for days for a very short period. It’s not only a place where you can post that you have a room available; you can also publish an announcement saying that you’re LOOKING for a room. Lately, landlords have also wanted to look at potential tenants instead of renting to the first one that appears. The website has useful extra features you have to pay for. If you want to see the latest announcements before anyone else, there are “Premium” subscriptions to receive alerts.

4. Room Mates UK.com

A very good page highly rated by UK users, but only for London. Advanced search engine (by date, zone, price, etc.). You can publish your “room wanted” announcement, receive alerts, and even chat with possible housemates. If you fill out your profile in detail, website recommends you other people with similar interests who you could live with.

5. Zoopla & Easyroommate

The easiest page to use. It’s really almost like a real estate website, as it has so many adverts about houses and flats for rent, properties for sale, and opportunities to share a house (managed by EasyRoomMate.com). With the usual alerts, search engines, maps of flats advertised, etc.

6. Rightmove.co.uk

This isn’t the first on the list because the users didn’t rate it higher, but it’s my favourite. Especially if you’re looking to rent an entire house with friends. It’s a search engine where almost all the real estate agencies publish their announcements. It’s really useful: you can filter by distance from a postcode that interests you, see the evolution of prices over the years and even the prices of the properties over the past few years. It also has a section of advice and information about renting. I really like this one.

7. Gumtree

The UK bible of advertisements, it’s the first website you learn about, whether you’re looking for job offers or a second-hand fridge. As far as looking for rooms goes, it’s the most popular because it’s free. The problem is that if there are any good announcements, they don’t last more than a few house, and there are a lot of shitty ones that don’t even come with photos or are scams. I think that if a landlord doesn’t want to post his house on a decent website that isn’t Gumtree, it’s because it’s rubbish. I’ve found my best homes through agencies and not on Gumtree. But it’s important to keep it in mind, because you never know when you’ll find a bargain.

For something short-term: days, weeks…

If you’re just on a visit or being a tourist, or you want something for a short time while you look for something more permanent, this is your section.

8. HostelWorld

When it comes to Hostels, B&Bs, or little guest houses anywhere in the world, and specifically in the UK, your reference is HostelWorld. If you’re looking for a hostel where you can spend a few weeks in a city before looking for a room/house for the long term, use the list the website gives you when you do a search by location, and visit the websites of the hostels or guest houses before you book. Much of the time, you’ll see they offer discounts for “long stays”.

9. House Trip

A slightly more expensive option if you’re alone, but if you’re in a group and you want an entire house or flat to yourselves for a bit, it’s the ideal website. The page is in six languages, with a search engine and email alerts with destination ideas, etc. Like a hotel room search engine, but for houses and entire flats.

10. Airbnb

Over the past few months, people have been talking a lot about this page and other websites where you can offer non-professional services, like Uber or EatWith. Right now, there are many people who sporadically offer up their houses or their cars, maybe working as a cook or a cab driver for a day. Well, Airbnb is a way to advertise a room as if it were a B&B. It’s used to rent free rooms in your house or as a way to stay at someone’s house when you’re travelling.
